Japan is to become the first country in the world to utilize J2EE platform-based, attached networking solutions. Mountain View, CA's Azul Systems is supporting the initiative, which uses unbound computer resources to support enterprises' applications running on Java and J2EE platforms. Japan's Nissho Electronics, a leading distributor and integrator of IT products, will sell and support Azul's products, under terms of the agreement.

Nissho intends to bring never-before seen levels of portability to Japan's utility computing strategy, itself a relatively new concept. The move is designed to eliminate capacity planning at the level of individual applications. Overall, Nissho is moving Japan towards a more committed resolution in outsourcing of computing resources, and providing on-demand computing strength.

To this end, Azul's compute pools, made up of small compute appliances, will be utilized to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and do away with needless complexity for users. Takashi Fukuda, senior managing executive officer of Nissho, said, "The Azul team has developed a truly innovative product that will deliver immediate cost and efficiency benefits to our customers."

Nissho exerts a powerful influence over Japan's entire IT sector, extending from systems integration, to carrier-class backbone networks, and down to peripherals. The company has a well-earned reputation for providing cutting-edge computing solutions to its clients.

Matt McLaughlin, vice president of worldwide field operations at Azul, provided a brief historical accounting, "Nissho Electronics has demonstrated this excellence [delivering unique services] repeatedly dating back to a relationship forged between Nissho and our CEO Stephen DeWitt when he was CEO of Cobalt Networks."

Nissho's Fukuda added, "Nissho was one of the earliest evangelists of network attached storage, and we believe that network attached processing will play an equally vital role in our utility computing solutions."

Azul's processing solution will be delivered in a three-tier stage. First will come pools of compute, for Java and J2EE allowing Andy application to drawn computing resources from the Sam enterprise resource. Then, there will be flexible, policy-base d management software to control the pools and resources. Finally, transparent virtual machine proxy technology will enable application to be redirected to the compute pool without any modification to existing infrastructure configurations. Field trials are to begin next month in Japan.
